How to Check if Two Instagram Accounts Follow Each Other (2026)

Instagram has no mutual-follow report. If both lists are visible, search one username inside the other. Followed by is a hint. Private accounts still need approval.

SUS cover: how to check if two Instagram accounts follow each other. Guide.

Instagram will not generate a page titled "these two follow each other". The check is manual, and it only works when you are allowed to see both following lists. For public accounts, that is anyone. For private accounts, that is approved followers only.

People search this because the app makes the relationship feel obvious — Suggested, Followed by, mutual friends — and then refuses to say the sentence out loud. The data is in the lists. It is just not labelled as a pair.

Method 1: search inside the following list

Open the first profile. Tap the number above Following. Tap the search field at the top of the list and type the second username exactly. Instagram filters the list. A hit means the follow exists in that direction. No hit means it does not, or the list is hidden from you.

Then do the other side. Mutual follow is two successful searches, not one. A single hit is one-way, which is the more common result and the one people misread as "they must follow each other".

This search is silent. It does not notify either account, which is the same rule as looking at a following list. You are filtering a page you can already see.

Method 2: the Followed by line

On a profile, Instagram sometimes prints Followed by and a handful of accounts you know. If it names the other person you are checking, you have a shortcut: at least one of those named accounts is a bridge. It is not the same as a complete mutual check, because Instagram shows a sample, not the full overlap.

Use it as a hint. Confirm with the search inside the list when the lists are visible. If the line is missing, that means nothing by itself — Instagram does not always populate it, and it prefers people in people you already know.

What this does not tell you

It does not tell you when the follow happened. There is no date on someone else's list, and the default order is not chronological. After 9 September 2026 that order also stopped being a usable clue.

It does not tell you who followed first. Mutual is a current state, not a history. If you need the change over time — they were not mutual last month, they are now — you need two saved copies of the list, the same method as recent follows.

It does not work when either list is private and you are not accepted. Guessing from counts, from a shared like, or from a comment is not a follow check.

If one of the accounts is yours

The fastest check is your own following list. Search their username there. Then open their profile and see whether it says Follows you. Those two facts are the mutual. Your side also has a date: Sort by Date followed on your own list, which is the record SUS turns into a timeline on iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a mutual followers button?

No. Instagram surfaces overlap in suggestions and in the Followed by line. It does not give you a report of every pair.

If they follow me, do I automatically follow them?

No. Follows are one-way until the other person follows back. That is why who doesn't follow you back is a separate list.

Can I check two accounts I do not follow?

Yes, if both are public. Open each following list and search. If either is private and has not accepted you, that side of the check is closed.

Does searching their list tell them I looked?

No. List views and search inside the list are silent.

Will a tracking app show mutual follows automatically?

Some products advertise a comparison between two public usernames. That is still the same two-list search underneath. It cannot see private lists, and it cannot add a date to a follow Instagram never dated.

What to take away

Mutual follow is two independent facts. Confirm both directions. Treat Followed by as a hint. Do not read list order as a start date.

If the account you actually needed dates for is your own, that is the list SUS is built to sort.
