How to See Mutual Followers on Instagram (2026)

Mutual followers are people who follow both of you, or accounts you both follow. Instagram only shows a sample. Search the list for a real answer.

SUS cover: how to see mutual followers on Instagram.

A mutual follower is someone who follows both accounts, or, in looser talk, an account you both follow. Instagram never gives you one page of every overlap.

What you get is the Followed by line and, if you can open the list, a search box. That is the whole tool.

The two kinds of mutual

The word covers two different things, and they live in two different lists. Pick the right one before you search.

Mutuals on the followers side

These are people who follow both of you. You find them by opening the profile's Followers list and looking for names you recognise.

Mutuals on the following side

These are accounts you both follow. Same idea, different list: open Following instead.

If you do not decide first, you will search one list, not find the name, and conclude the follow does not exist. It may simply be on the other side.

How to check one name

Where the search box is

Open the list you care about, then tap the search control at the top. On a public profile you can search both Followers and Following. On your own profile the same boxes are there.

What the result means

If the username appears, that follow exists today. If it does not appear, one of three things is true: the follow is not there, the list is hidden from you, or you searched the wrong side.

The search is silent. It sends no notification, and the profile owner never sees it. If that is your worry, the full answer is here: does Instagram notify when you view a following list.

Why the Followed by line is only a sample

Open a profile and you will often see a short line under the name: Followed by a, b and c. It reads like a summary of your overlap. It is not a complete one.

That line is generated for you, at that moment, from accounts Instagram thinks are relevant to you. It changes between viewers, and it can change between visits. Treat it as a hint, never as a list.

What a mutual tells you, and what it does not

A mutual tells you that a follow exists right now. That is genuinely useful: it answers a yes or no question in a few seconds.

It does not tell you who followed first, or when. No date is attached to a mutual, on either side. So if the real question is "did they follow her before or after we started talking", a mutual check cannot answer it, and more searching will not help.

Dates stay on your list

Mutual names do not tell you who followed first. When the question is about you, sort your own Following list by date.

How to sort your own list

Open your profile, tap Following, tap the sort control, and choose Date followed. Latest puts your newest follows at the top. That is Instagram's own record for your account, and it is the only place follow dates appear at all.

SUS turns those dates into a readable timeline on iPhone, so you can see your own recent follows without working through a sort.

Checking a different question

Sometimes the real question is not "do we share a mutual" but "do these two accounts follow each other". That is a separate check with its own method, and it does not use the mutual line at all: how to check if two Instagram accounts follow each other.

When you cannot open the list

If the list does not open, the account has restricted it. A private account shows only what it chooses to show, and you cannot search a list you cannot see.

The owner can also hide their following list from everyone. That is a separate setting from going private, and it applies even to accounts you already follow. Both cases end the same way for you: no search box, no mutual check.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a mutual followers button?

No. You get a sample line and a search box.

Why is my friend not on Followed by?

The line is not complete. Search their username instead.

Can I see who we both followed this week?

Not from one look. Their side has no dates. Your side does.

Does a private account show mutuals?

Only the public profile bits, unless they have accepted you.

Does the other person know I searched their list?

No. Searching a public list is silent and sends no notification.

Can I see mutuals on my own profile?

Yes. Open your Followers or Following list and search. On your own profile you can also sort by date.

Why does the Followed by line change between visits?

It is built per viewer and per visit, from accounts Instagram thinks are relevant to you. Different people see different names.

Is there any way to get a full list of mutuals?

No. Instagram does not publish an overlap list. You check names one at a time, or you compare your own two lists.

What to take away

Treat mutuals as a sample plus a search. Do not read the line as a full shared list.
