Can you completely hide your Following list on Instagram?

Not completely. Instagram doesn't offer a single switch to hide your entire Following list. While a private account changes who can see relationships involving private accounts, public-account relationships remain visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads.

What a private account actually hides

Meta treats public-account relationships and private-account relationships differently.

Public accounts you follow—and those that follow you—remain visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads, regardless of whether your account is public or private.

Connections to private accounts are only visible to your followers if your account is private. If your account is public, anyone on Instagram can see them.

When your account is private, your photos and videos are limited to your followers. Your profile photo, name, username and bio remain visible to anyone on or off Instagram.

How to make your account private

On the web, select More, then Settings, then Account Privacy. Turn on Private account and confirm by selecting Switch to private.

Business profiles cannot be made private directly. They must switch back to a personal account first.

Removing an existing follower

To remove a follower (available for private accounts), open your profile on the web, select Followers, select Remove next to the person, and confirm Remove. The person will not be notified.

Removing a follower means they no longer follow you. It does not make a public account private. If the account stays public, its information stays public.

Blocking a specific account

Blocking is an account-level control, not a privacy setting for your Following list. You can block a single profile, or also choose to block other accounts they currently have or may create later. The person is not notified when you block them.

After a block, the person cannot mention your username or tag you. Existing message threads remain in Direct, but you cannot continue messaging them; group chats follow different rules. Keep in mind that a blocked person may still see your likes and comments on posts shared by public profiles or profiles they follow.

Which setting matches your goal?

If your goal is to limit who sees your photos, videos and relationships involving private accounts, make the account private.

If someone who currently follows you should no longer see your private account, remove them as a follower.

If you need a broader account-level boundary with one person, blocking changes mentions, tags and messaging. It is not a separate switch for hiding only the Following list.

Instagram's current documented controls do not provide a way to hide every Following relationship while keeping all other account visibility unchanged.
