What Does Recently Followed Mean on Instagram? (Not a Date Sort)
The phrase means new follows, not the first names on a profile. Instagram does not tag those rows as recent on someone else's page. On yours, the date sort is the label.
Recently followed means the accounts a person started following not long ago. It does not mean "the first row on their Following list."
Instagram never stamps that phrase on someone else's rows. People use the words because they want the newest names, and the app does not hand those names over in order.
What people think they are looking at
They open Following and treat the top few names as this week's follows. Those names are often accounts Instagram thinks are relevant to the viewer. A brand-new follow can be nowhere near the top.
Where the phrase is real
On your own list, after you sort by the latest date, the top is actually recent. That is the only place the app lines the words up with the calendar. SUS shows the same dates, so "recent" is a stretch of your own follows, not a guess about someone else.
What a new follow does not prove
A new follow is a button. It can be a friend, a shop, or a creator. It is not, by itself, a message about the relationship. If you are checking your own week before a hard conversation, sort the list first so you know the names.
Frequently asked questions
Is recently followed the same as followers?
No. Followers are people who follow the account. Recently followed would be accounts that account just followed.
Does Followed by mean recently followed?
No. That line is a few accounts you know that follow this profile. It has no dates.
How far back is recent?
Instagram does not define it on someone else's list. On yours, you see the order of dates and decide what "recent" means.
What to take away
The phrase means a new follow. The app only puts those in order on your own list. SUS shows that order on iPhone.
