Instagram Follow Notifications: What You Get, and What You Never Will (2026)
Instagram alerts you when someone follows you, and when you follow them they may get an alert. It never alerts you that a third person followed someone new.
Instagram will tell you that someone followed you. It will often tell them that you followed them. It will not tell you that your partner, your friend, or a creator just followed a new account.
That missing alert is why people go looking at lists. The notification system and the following list are different products. One pings you. The other is a page of names with no dates for other people.

A new follower of you. A follow request if your account is private. Likes, comments, and mentions. Story views, to the person who posted the story. Messages. These are actions aimed at you or at content you posted.

Alerts Instagram never sends
It does not ping you when someone you follow follows a new account. It does not ping them when you open their following or followers list. There is no built-in "they followed someone new" switch. If an app offers that alert, it is comparing public lists over time, not reading an Instagram notification.
