Last Followed on Instagram: What It Means (Not a Hidden Log)
"Last followed" means the most recent account someone tapped Follow on. Instagram does not label that account on anyone else's profile. Your own list can be sorted by date. Everyone else's list has to be compared over time.

The last account someone followed is not the first name in their following list. Instagram does not stamp other people's follows with a time, and it does not offer a "latest follow" row. If you have been scrolling from the top hoping the newest follow will surface, that is the wrong screen.
The phrase gets used for three different objects: the last account they followed, the last account that followed them, and the last time their count moved. Only the first one is "last followed". Mixing them is how people end up in follower history when they wanted a name.
Why the official list is the wrong place to look
The following tab is a list of accounts, not a log. Instagram orders it for the viewer with its own order. People you both know, and accounts you interact with, sit above newest follows, which is why the following list order feels shuffled even when nothing new happened.
Until September 2026, some people treated that shuffle as a weak time signal anyway. Instagram removed even that. The September change left the names and took the leftover chronology. Looking at position 1 on someone else's list and calling it "last followed" is now a guess with no remaining basis.
The one last-followed view that is real
Your own following list. Open it, tap Sort, choose Date followed: Latest. The account at the top is the last one you followed, according to Instagram's own stored date. That is the only last-followed view the platform ships.
SUS is built around that personal date sort. It does not invent dates for other people. If the question you typed was secretly about your own list — who did I just follow, and when — you already have the answer on iPhone.
How to approximate it on someone else
You cannot recover the last follow from before you started looking. You can detect the next one. Record every username in the following list today. Record it again later. Names that appear only in the second capture are follows that landed in the interval. The newest among those, relative to your captures, is the closest thing to "last followed" the public data supports.
That is the same three-step method as seeing who someone recently followed: save a copy, wait, then compare. A tool can do the comparison for you. It cannot recover last year.
Shared activity is a narrower native option. On an account you follow that also follows you, the three-dot menu can show accounts you both follow and when each of you followed them. It covers people you both follow, not the whole list, so it answers "last followed among people we share", not "last followed, period".
Limits that do not go away
The clock starts when you start. Public accounts only. A follow can show up late. A private account you have not been accepted by has no list to capture. And "last followed" is not a verdict about a relationship. It is a username that entered a set.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see the last person someone followed inside Instagram?
Only on your own account, via Date followed. On anyone else, no.
Is the top of their following list the newest follow?
No. Ranking is not newest-first, and since September 2026 it is not a stand-in for newest-first either.
What about last follower, not last followed?
That is the other list, and the same rules apply: no dates for other people, a saved copy of the list to see who joined, counts are not names.
Will they know I checked who they last followed?
Opening the list is silent. Mentioning the name later is not.
Can a tracking app show their last follow from last month if I only started today?
No. Without an earlier saved copy of the list there is no previous set to subtract. The first capture is a list of who they follow right now, not a history.
What to take away
Last followed is a dated event. Instagram stores that date for you and not for anyone you are peeking at. Everyone else requires a before and an after.
If the date you wanted was yours, sort your own list — or let SUS do that on iPhone.
